An hour later, Cate decided to walk to the park and watch a bit of the impromptu football game herself. It was really an excuse to check on Seth, but sheâd never let him know that. She wanted to make sure Davy Cusak and his rowdy gang from the Academy werenât there, although she doubted theyâd come all the way across town just for that. As far as she knew, they all lived in the nearby suburb of Lake Oswego.
Earlier, sheâd been working on a scrapbook sheâd started for Seth when he was a baby. This afternoon, she added some photos of him as a toddler, touched the locks of his baby hair sheâd taped to the book, glowed over some charming little pictures heâd drawn in kindergarten, the blue ribbon he won for spelling, and all other sorts of things she couldnât bear to toss out. They were all things she hoped would someday be interesting and memorable to him.
She considered a picture of him with his classmates sheâd taken during a recent outing to OMSI to view the exhibit on space travel. Seth stood off to one side, almost by himself, a bit fuzzy in the photo as if heâd moved just as the picture was snapped. The rest of the boys were a group, arms around each other, clowning and laughing for the camera.
Her heart ached for Seth. She knew what it was like to feel left out.
Sheâd never noticed before how Sethâs image was blurred. It was as if heâd moved just as the picture was snapped. What was clear to her was that Seth looked more like his father every day. She remembered then there was a picture of Lucas in the locket Taj gave her when Seth was born. The locket was a beauty, 12 karat gold with a black onyx face and a large âSâ on it. Inside, Taj had placed the Polaroid shot on Cate and Lucas she took that night nine years ago at the graduation party. Looking at it always gave her a twinge, even though the image of Lucas was blurry and indistinct.
One by one, Cate took out pictures and memorabilia from the big keepsake box and put them on the table. The locket was not there. She was sure sheâd put it in the box, afraid sheâd lose it. It had been there, along with Sethâs first pair of baby shoes, his little name bracelet from the hospital, and Cateâs high school graduation certificate.
She sifted again through the contents, pawing through the papers and picture. The switchblade Lucas gave her that night so long ago was there. It made a hollow clunk when she found it and dropped it back into the box.
But the locket was gone.
The disappearance mystified her. Where could it be? Seth couldnât have taken it. He didnât even know this box of keepsakes existed. She planned to show him its contents, but not until he was a bit older. In the meantime, the box had been shoved to the back of a shelf high in her closet.
